Public Arts

Public Arts

Jon Batiste

Students in the Public Arts Pathway are united by their love for arts and culture and by their appreciation for those things as means to illuminate shared challenges, inspire discussion, and effect change. This pathway will encourage consideration of topics such as urban beautification, long-term legacy, and innovation and experimentation. Students will gain an understanding of how cross-sector partnerships and community engagement can amplify the work of artists and culture bearers to strengthen society.

Begin Your Public Arts Pathway

The first step in beginning your pathway is signing up for the Public Arts Newsletter. If you are a First Year student, this is completed during the pathway selection process after subscribing to the general Pathways Newsletter. Second Year students can subscribe directly to Pathways-specific newsletters using the same form. Our team will send an email right to your inbox every other week detailing all Public Arts related events happening around grounds. This newsletter will be your primary connection to our curated opportunities. Through these events, you can build connections in the field, gain experience, develop knowledge about key current events, and meet peers, faculty, and alumni interested in public service.

Some exciting examples of past events and guest speakers include:

  • Public Media Career Talks
    • Meet Angilee Shah, the CEO and Editor-in-Chief of the nonprofit news organization Charlottesville Tomorrow, in Central Virginia.
  • Panels on Sephardic Women's Lives and the Art of Biography
    • The panels of this conference will focus on Sephardic women’s lives, which rarely get told as biography, and ask: What might these stories teach us about modern Jewish history, histories of the Mediterranean, and global history? And how can biography provide new insights into these oft-neglected histories?
  • Anthropology, Popular Memory, and Literature of Israel/Palestine
    • Learning Together Lunch Hour Series sponsored by the UVA Jewish Studies Program featuring UVA Professor Dan Lefkowitz. Join for an hour of learning, talking and eating together. Everyone is welcome. Lunch provided.
  • The Art of Thinking Freely
    • How Denis Diderot’s work reshaped political thought in ways that continue to influence our democratic culture
