Every other week, UVA Public Service recognizes students involved in public service in various ways, whether through volunteering, community or civic engagement, activism, social entrepreneurship, service-learning coursework or research, and other co-curricular service activities and interests.

Vivian Garcia
Vivian Garcia is a second-year majoring in economics in the College. She is currently the chair of the UVA Student Council Service Committee and has volunteered through Madison House at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and Greenbrier Elementary School C.L.A.S.S. Program. In her free time, she works at Asado and is a member of the Pi Beta Phi Virginia Epsilon Chapter.
Nicki Hussini
Nicki Hussini is a fourth-year majoring in Global Public Health in the College. Nicki co-founded UVA's chapter of Natural Teeth, an organization that promotes a world where all smiles come naturally, working to educate and emphasize oral health in elementary schools and other areas of need. Nicki also is a Peer Health Educator, volunteers in a microbiology lab, and is the outreach chair for a student hip-hop group.
Val Cyphers
Val Cyphers is a fourth-year double-majoring in English and biology. Outside of her classes, Val is an ADAPT Peer Educator and a former co-chair of the program. Val also volunteers with the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry; as a patient ambassador with Madison House's Medical Services; and is a volunteer with the Adopt-a-Grandparent program. Val has also served as a member of the University Advisory Committee on Alcohol and Substance Misuse.
Summer Maxwell
Summer Maxwell is a fourth-year in the College double-majoring in economics and psychology. While at UVA, Summer has been involved in Dance Marathon, One Less, PULSE Sustained Dialogue, and is currently the co-director of Camp Kesem. Next year, she is moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work in wealth management for Baird.
Mira Bagous
Mira Bagous is a fourth-year Biology major with a minor in Bioethics. Mira volunteers with Charlottesville Area Riding Therapy (CART) through Madison House, and she works for the Arc of the Piedmont as a caregiver for a young girl with disabilities. She also is the Events and Peer Relations Intern for the Peer Health Educators. Mira also has worked as a counselor at Camp Holiday Trails, a local summer camp for children with special medical needs.
Ashley Williams
Ashley Williams is a fourth-year in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Human Biology. Ashley volunteers with Madison House's Medical Services program where she has worked in the Outpatient Surgery Center and Emergency Department for 2 years. She is also a Peer Health Educator, works as a Planned Parenthood Generation Action Community Organizer and has also been a CASPCA Foster Parent during her time at UVA.
Joyce Cheng
Joyce Cheng is a fourth-year in the College of Arts & Sciences majoring in Human Biology with a minor in Global Sustainability. Joyce has been volunteering with the Madison House program Adopt-a-Grandparent (AAGP) since her first semester of college, and she became a program director her second year.
Jonathan Kim
Jonathan Kim is a fourth-year in the College of Arts & Sciences, double-majoring in economics and statistics. Jonathan is the head program director for Creating Assets, Savings and Hope (CASH), a Madison House program that helps file taxes for low-income Charlottesville families. Since his time with the program, he has assisted with giving back over $4 million to the Charlottesville community.
Rebecca Alemayehu
Rebecca Abiy Alemayehu is a rising third-year majoring in Political and Social Thought in the College of Arts & Sciences. Rebecca has worked as both a tutor to her peers at the University and also to local high school students in Charlottesville. Rebecca is also an advisor in the Office of African American Affairs Peer Advising Program.
Jennifer Flores
Jennifer Flores is a second-year majoring in Global Development Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences. Jennifer is an outgoing executive for the Hispanic/Latinx Peer Mentoring Program, where she helps incoming first-year and transfer students get acclimated into UVA by helping create a community. Jennifer also is heavily involved in the Southwood community, where she coordinates child care every Thursday so that community members can attend development meetings and also volunteers during community events, such as holiday festivals.
JaRhonda Roberts
JaRhonda Roberts is a third-year majoring in architecture in the School of Architecture. JaRhonda volunteers with the Boys & Girls Club as a tutor for reading and math for children aged 5 to 12, and she also tutors children who have English as a second language at Buford Middle School. JaRhonda also volunteers with the Salvation Army. In the past, JaRhonda has worked with Special Olympics (USC and UCLA) and with Shepard Cove, where she served breakfast to the homeless community and gave out toys to children during Christmas.
Shannon Mooney
Shannon Mooney is a third-year in the College of Arts & Sciences majoring in Government. Shannon is an after-school tutor, and she goes to the Boys and Girls Club once a week to spend time with third- and fourth-grade students in the community and provide homework help. Shannon also is involved with her sorority's philanthropy, Girls on the Run.
