Brighter than Ever: A Solar-Powered Light Show at LOTL

By:
Emma Sisk

Rotunda during LOTL light showLighting of the Lawn 2021 was "Brighter than Ever." In partnerships with groups across UVA and the greater Charlottesville area, our student committee organized and executed the beloved event. Being the 20th anniversary of LOTL, we worked to make the show innovative and unforgettable.

Reflecting back on the night, there are countless aspects of the show that I am proud of. This year, in partnership with Cville Solar Project, Sun Tribe, and UVA Facilities Management, the LOTL lightshow was entirely solar powered. We all worked together to assemble solar panels on the Rotunda that would be used to generate the power for this year’s extended lightshow – almost 25 minutes in duration! With attendance exceeding 14,000 people, I am thrilled to know that such a large crowd was able to witness a victory in sustainability.

Solar panelsTo further bolster excitement and buzz about the solar-powered light show, UVA Sustainability created a contest where students could voice their ideas about potential solar-panel use across Grounds. The prize: a generous gift card to a local Charlottesville restaurant.

In future years, LOTL plans to continue our partnership with both Cville Solar Project and Sun Tribe to further improve the event’s sustainability. If you were able to join us in person, I hope you felt the pure magic that night. If you were unable to attend and would like to learn more about the solar-powered lightshow, I invite you to watch the recording here.

I would like to thank Adam O’Neill (President of Cville Solar Project), Katherine Knight (Development Manager at Sun Tribe), our Facilities Management family, Zach (my co-chair), and the entire LOTL 2021 committee. This beautiful tradition would not have been possible without you all. Let Lighting of the Lawn 2021 remind us all that we are Brighter than Ever.
